I love teaching about Islam because of how many Americans misunderstand it. Many Americans think that Muslims are terrorists, and they don't understand how important the Muslims were to modern society. When islam first started, it was basically a different version of Christianity and Judaism. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in the same God (but they call him different names), they all believe in the same original story of Adam and Eve, the same ten commandments, many of the same prophets like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, etc (a prophet is someone that God speaks to and sends to do something), and they have very simple rules. Islam is about giving to God and giving to your community. And when students learn this, it often makes them see Muslims in a different way. Plus all the amazing things that Muslims did for civilization - the advances in math and science, the inventions, the trade - they were responsible for helping get Western Europe out of the Middle Ages (when people were isolated and on manors). And then you learn about how Islam spread to West Africa which connects these huge, wealthy, and powerful empires like Ghana, Mali, and Songhai that were across the Sahara Desert with the Muslims. This trade produced so much wealth AND it shows kids that Africans were not always slaves - they had powerful kingdoms just like in Europe (except at this time, Europeans were less powerful than Africans).
So your task today is to find websites and videos that will help students learn the Regents facts about Islam, the Spread of Islam, the Golden Age of Islam, and the West African kingdoms. When you have found a video and a website, start a GoogleDoc AND SHARE IT WITH FEINBERG to draft your comment where you explain how the website and video will help students to learn the facts and vocabulary about Islam, the Spread of Islam, the Golden Age of Islam, and the West African kingdoms from the multiple choice questions. The last part of your comment should be about how Islam, its spread, its Golden Age, and West African kingdoms relates to TWO of these 5 essential questions for learning history:
1.How can geography help or hinder the development of a specific society?
2.How/why do governments change society in social, political, economic ways?
3.How do social, political, or economic ideas impact society?
4.How does trade limit or develop a society?
5.How does technology impact societies in both positive and negative ways?
Feinberg will be giving you comments and feedback as you draft your comment, that way he can make sure you're being as detailed in your analysis as you can.
